< Date: 29 July 2015

Service Skills Australia (SSA) have recently completed a review of the Tourism, Travel & Hospitality Training Package which includes the Certificate II, III and IV in Holiday Parks & Resorts.

The changes to these training packages include:

Tourism and travel qualifications

All Travel and Tourism qualifications, units of competency and their associated assessment requirements have been transitioned to the Standards for Training Packages.

Key Changes:

  • “Management” added to the title of Diploma and Advanced Diploma qualifications to better reflect job roles at this level.
  • Entry requirements for Certificate IV in Travel and Tourism, Diploma in Travel and Tourism Management and Advanced Diploma in Travel and Tourism Management have been removed and qualifications re-structured to accommodate this change.
  • Two new units have been included relating to social media and one new unit included in relation to filling LPG gas bottles.
  • First aid has been removed from the core of the two Guiding qualifications and has been made a prerequisite for these qualifications.

Events qualifications

All SIT Events qualifications, units of competency and their associated assessment requirements have been transitioned to the Standards for Training Packages.

Key changes:

  • “Management” added to the title of Diploma and Advanced Diploma qualifications to better reflect job roles at this level.

Hospitality qualifications

All SIT Hospitality qualifications, units of competency and their associated assessment requirements have been transitioned to the Standards for Training Packages.

Key changes:

  • “Management” added to the title of Diploma and Advanced Diploma qualifications to better reflect job roles at this level.
  • New qualification Certificate III in Hospitality (Restaurant Front of House) has been proposed to provide specialist skills for those working in front of house roles in dining establishments.
  • First aid has been moved from the core of all cookery qualifications to the electives as feedback has indicated that it is not required in all job roles and it is more appropriate to allow its selection as an elective when required.
  • Certificate IV in Asian Cookery is proposed for deletion, due to low national uptake of only 26 commencements nationwide in 2013 according to NCVER statistics. Outcomes may be met by combination of Certificate III in Asian Cookery and new Kitchen Management Skill Set.
  • One new unit has been added to the gaming units relating to casino gaming machines and one unit has been deleted regarding operating table games. The content of this deleted unit has been included in other appropriate table games units.

Skill sets

  • Licenced Travel Agent skill set deleted due to repeal of travel agent licensing nationwide.
  • New Kitchen Management Skill Set to provide skills for management and supervision of kitchens.
  • New Social Media for Small Business Skill Set in response to identified industry need.
  • New Governance for Board Directors Skill Set in response to identified industry need.

Prior to these changes taking effect SSA have called for comment on the changes.  Your feedback will help ensure that the training packages specific to our sector remain relevant and provide appropriate skills for the individuals employed in the caravanning and camping sector.
