LEGO caravan earns GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS title
Caravanning Queensland together with Top Parks are officially the new GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS™ title holders for the world’s largest LEGO® caravan.
The LEGO® caravan is a life-size replica of an iconic 1973 Viscount Royal and features 288, 630 individual LEGO® bricks.
The project was commissioned to celebrate the 50th annual Queensland Caravan, Camping & Touring Supershow and the idea was developed by John Cochrane Advertising and Gold Coast Brick Builder Ben Craig.
Ben said the project was completed with the help of a team of up to 20 adult fans of LEGO® after 10 weeks of planning.
“Caravanning Queensland and Top Parks wanted something that would really capture caravanning and promote it as part of the anniversary of the Supershow,” he said.
“Most of my builds are about 20, 000 bricks maximum so this is more than 10 times that… it’s a big effort.”
“As an artist you get so close to it; it’s amazing to see it come to completion with 288, 630 bricks.”
The project was officially declared a world record holder by official GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS™ adjudicator Brian Sobel at a ceremony at Brisbane Holiday Village.
Mr Sobel said there had been very strict guidelines and requirements that had to be met.
“We have made sure that first and foremost it is a complete and full design, there can’t be any LEGO® pieces hanging off or the roof not finished or anything like that, and we have to make sure it has the same amenities that the original would have.”
“We’ve measured to make sure it is the exact proportion, and most importantly we have the actual piece count. Any LEGO® structure in GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS™ is measured by piece count.”
“I have seen a lot of records and I love the ones that are like this with some sort of creative process. This one is a huge planning process and the people involved all have to have a major stake in it so I particularly like those records.”
Caravanning Queensland General Manager Jason Plant said they had always wanted to do something on a grand scale.
“It’s fantastic to be part of a project that will connect two great family activities – LEGO® and holidaying – and shed a new light on caravanning and camping in Queensland with a GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS™ title,” he said.
Head of Top Parks David Smith said as Australia’s largest network of independent parks, the company had thrown its support behind the project.
“The Viscount van symbolises the memories of many Australians, back in the 70s and 80s, of a family caravanning and camping trip,” said Mr Smith.
“Over the coming months we hope to see the caravan hit the road, visiting key destinations in our extensive network of parks. It’s fair to say it will turn some heads, and we hope it will also inspire people to make their own dream holidays a reality – no matter how ambitious they may be.”
The caravan has beaten the previous title holder for the Largest LEGO® caravan by 73,472 bricks.
