Additional risk mitigation strategy for pet-friendly parks

Caravan Industry Association of Australia was recently contacted by a guest of a caravan holiday park who was impressed to see reception staff promoting the Yellow Dog Project. It’s an initiative that we also think makes a lot of sense – especially for park operators embracing a ‘pet-friendly’ environment.

The Yellow Dog Project is an education campaign that lets people in public spaces know a dog needs space by using a clear visual aid – a yellow lead, collar, ribbon, bandana or vest.

This acts as a quick and easy guide to gauging a dog’s comfort level at a distance, and lets you know to proceed with caution.

Through communicating the need for space, the Yellow Dog Project helps prevent dogs being triggered by unpredictable encounters that cause panic or stress. These encounters often undermine the careful training and rehabilitation strategies guardians have put in place.

The Yellow Dog Project is not regulated by animal management or animal care legislation. It does not replace appropriate training and does not exempt guardians from taking responsibility for their dog’s behaviour.

Mitigating potential risks associated with dogs in your park is not easy, but education can help reduce the risk of unwanted flare ups that could be avoided just by making pet owners aware.
