Gas appliance certification: Updates to AS/NZS 5263 series

The Australian Gas Association (AGA) recently confirmed that if a product is certified under multiple standards (or multiple parts of a standard series), the certification update must be completed in line with the earliest publication date of the updated standards.

There have been recent updates to the AS/NZS 5263 series, covering gas appliances. The updates are as follows:

  • AS/NZS 5363.0 Gas Appliances – General requirements, revised standard published 23/06/2023
  • AS/NZS 5263.1.7 Gas Appliances – Domestic outdoor gas cooking appliances, amendment published 22/03/2024

AS/NZS 5363.0 is a core standard for gas appliances, referenced by the other Part 1 standards in the series.  As such, most appliance certifications will invoke this standard and therefore require updates to their certification by 23/06/2025.

Significant changes to AS/NZS 5363.0 include new vibration test requirements and variations to appliance markings and installation/usage instructions.

Suppliers of gas cooking appliances are advised to urgently check their product certifications and ensure that, where necessary, they have been updated and recertified in line with the revised AS/NZS 5363 standards.

Installers, vehicle manufacturers and service/repair businesses are advised to confirm with your appliance suppliers that they have undertaken any necessary recertification steps.

All gas appliance suppliers are reminded that product certifications (e.g. with AGA or similar certification bodies) must be updated within two years of the publication of a revised or amended standard. Failure to update within this timeframe may result in the suspension of a product certification under the Gas Technical Regulators Committee Scheme Rules.
