Clarification: Rules relating to external kitchens and slide-outs

There has been recent commentary within industry that the rules relating to external kitchens and slide-out cookers may have changed.

While there was a recent amendment to LP Gas installation standard AS/NZS 5601.2, published in September 2024, these revisions did not significantly change the installation requirements for external kitchens or slide-outs.

The amended clauses clarified requirements for cooking appliances in slide-out kitchen and external installation arrangements, with a particular focus on appliances fitted with after-market covers.

There are changes under way in AS/NZS 5263.0, the general safety standard for appliances that will take effect mid-2025, introducing new vibration testing requirements.

One effect of these changes is appliances that are unable to meet these new requirements may be withdrawn from sale at the appropriate time.  Manufacturers and installers are strongly encouraged to consult with their appliance suppliers as they navigate this period of transition.

Industry businesses are reminded that compliance with the gas installation standard AS/NZS 5601.2 is mandatory for any recreational vehicle fitted with LP Gas equipment and/or appliances.
