Tribute
Des Watts OAM was an industry pioneer and a founding member of BIG4 Holiday Parks. Established in Ballarat in 1979, BIG4 was the result of independent business owners, including Des, coming together with a vision to revolutionise the caravan park industry by offering first-class accommodation, facilities, and service. Des’s leadership and vision were instrumental in shaping the standards of excellence that define our industry today.
Des, alongside his wife Margaret, was also a pivotal figure in the Victorian Caravan Parks Association. His seven-year tenure as a committee member was marked by active and innovative contributions, significantly impacting the industry’s growth and community spirit. Des’s influence extended beyond organizational boundaries; he was a charismatic presence known for his sizeable stature and boundless enthusiasm. His ability to command attention and articulate insights about our industry made him a respected figure, capable of uniting people across Australia and New Zealand through shared goals and camaraderie.
His contributions were recognized at the highest levels. In 2003, Des was honoured with the Eric Hayman Award for services to the industry by the Caravan Industry Association of Australia. His legacy was further cemented in 2009 when VicParks named him an Industry Legend, and in 2020, he received an Order of Australia Medal, acknowledging his extensive service to the caravan industry.
Des’s commitment to community and service extended beyond the caravan parks. He served as a member of the Victoria Police, a Councillor with the City of Ballarat, contributed two decades to Ballarat Tourism, and was an active member of SA Parks, CCIA NSW, and the Caravan Industry Association of Australua. His multifaceted contributions have left an indelible mark on our industry and the communities he served.
As we remember Des, we celebrate not just his achievements but the spirited and generous man who dedicated his life to enhancing the caravan park experience for all. Des’s legacy will live on in the standards he set, the relationships he built, and the vibrant industry community he helped foster.
